Heard a tech at a supply house say he never mounts a panel on exterior walls here in Vegas, and it finally made sense
Was picking up a box of 22/4 last Tuesday at the supply counter off Industrial Road and this older guy next to me was going off about how he refuses to screw a can onto any exterior wall in this city. At first I figured he was just being picky about his work. Then he said he'd pulled three keypads in one summer out in Henderson where the temp swing inside that wall hit 40 degrees a day and the boards were cooking themselves. I've been mounting panels wherever the wire lands for six years and never connected the dots on heat. I thought about the two service calls I ate last August out in Summerlin where the panels read fine at 8am and went dumb by 3pm, and both of those cans were on garage exterior walls facing west. Since then I've been moving every panel to an interior closet wall when the layout lets me. Cost me maybe 20 extra feet of wire per job and zero callbacks so far. Anybody else changing where they land the can because of heat, or am I late to something obvious?
That line about the boards cooking themselves is real. West facing garage walls out here turn into ovens by mid afternoon and the can just bakes in there. Moving it inside is the easiest fix nobody wants to pay for until they eat a callback.
