TIL the plumber who fixed my burst pipe on Cornell Dr saved me $400 by just replacing the valve
Called three plumbers last Tuesday after water hit my kitchen floor, and the first two quoted $600 and $550 before even looking at it. The third guy showed up in 20 minutes, swapped a $15 valve, charged me $150, and told me the others were just padding the bill.

Had the same thing happen on my street two winters back. One guy told me the whole shutoff assembly needed to go, wanted $700, but my neighbor's handyman came over and had the valve swapped in like 30 minutes for $120. Always ask them to show you the part they're replacing before they start, because once it's in their hand you can't tell if it was really bad or not. The ones who pad the bill count on you being too stressed about water damage to push back.
