I tried using a metal detector at a local park and found a 1978 soda can tab

I was convinced I'd found something cool near the old oak tree, but it was just modern litter. Has anyone else had a 'discovery' that turned out to be totally recent junk?

Toss a magnet on a string next time. It helps sort out the junk iron from the good stuff before you even dig. What kind of detector are you using?

That 1978 tab is actually vintage now, not modern litter. It's over 45 years old.

Ever wonder if you should keep those old pull tabs? I was on the fence too until I found a whole bunch from the 70s and put them in a little display jar. It's a cool piece of history now, not trash. That magnet trick from @blairtaylor is a lifesaver for clearing out the newer junk first. It saves so much time and lets you focus on the older signals. What do you do with your vintage finds?
