Had a customer at the shop yesterday point out a dent I missed on their trunk lid

I mean, it was a small thing right near the hinge, probably woulda been fine. But the guy just quietly goes "hey what about this one" and points. I musta looked at that car for 20 minutes before starting and totally skipped over it. Made me think about how easy it is to get tunnel vision after looking at the same panel for too long. Does anyone else take a break and come back for a second look before calling a job done?

And that exact thing happened to me last week on a goddamn bookshelf I was painting. Stared at it for so long I convinced myself the tiny crack was supposed to be a wood grain detail.

Hold your ground, @lauras83. Honestly, staring at something that long just means you're properly committing to the project instead of rushing through it.

Got a buddy who spent two whole days staring at a fence he was staining. He kept walking back and forth, squinting at it from every angle, convinced he missed a spot. Turns out the "spot" was just a knot in the wood that was darker than the rest. By the time he finally gave up and rolled the stain on, it looked exactly like every other fence on the block. He said he felt like a fool but at least his fence was even now. Sometimes your eyes just start lying to you when you look too long at something.
