That $20 fuel pressure tester saved me from a $900 mistake today
Got a 2014 F-150 in the shop this morning, owner swore it was the fuel pump. Rough start, sputtering under load, all the classic signs. I was about to quote him for a new pump and labor, but I grabbed my cheap mechanical gauge and hooked it up to the rail first. Pressure sat at 38 psi at idle but dropped to 15 when I revved it. That told me the pump was fine, the fuel pressure regulator was the problem. Swapped that out for $48 and the truck runs perfect. If I'd trusted the symptoms I would've taken his money and still had a broken truck. Anyone else have a cheap tool that's stopped you from a big misdiagnosis lately?

The gauge just showed the pressure, the regulator diagnosis still took some actual thinking.

The gauge is just the easy part, honestly. It tells you what, not why. But a regulator can fail in a few different ways that all show the same pressure, so you still have to trace the lines and check for weeping or stuck diaphragms. That's where the real work is, and a lot of folks skip it because they think the number is the whole story. Not quite, but you already figured that out the hard way.
