TIL a customer's old Ford pickup taught me to listen for the quiet problems
An older guy came into the shop last month with a '78 F-150 that had a faint, high-pitched whine only above 50 mph, and he said, 'It sounds like a tea kettle getting ready to whistle,' which made me check the transfer case output bearing first, and sure enough, that was it.

That tea kettle sound is such a perfect way to describe it.

Remember that old radiator in my first apartment? It made the same noise right before the heat kicked on.

Right? That exact whistle before it boils over.
