I picked the shorter route over the high pass and missed the best view

Had to choose between the 22-mile loop with the 11,000-foot pass or the 18-mile valley route in the Trinity Alps last weekend. Everyone online said the pass view was unbeatable, but we were behind schedule and worried about afternoon storms. We took the valley, which was nice with good creeks, but super buggy and just forest the whole time. Then we met a group coming down from the pass who showed us photos, and it looked incredible with no clouds at all. Kind of kicking myself now for playing it safe. Has anyone else skipped a big climb and regretted it later?

Always pick the high route, the view is your real payday.

My husband once talked me out of a side trail to a waterfall on a really hot day. We heard the roar from the main path later and I still give him grief about it.

The_matthew's "view is your real payday" line hits different now. I used to always pick the easier, safer trail to save energy. But after skipping a ridge hike in the Sierras and seeing my friend's photos, I get it. The grind is part of the story, and the safe choice just leaves you wondering.
