My old way of finding trails was endless forum digging, now I just grab GPX files and go
Spent 2 hours last week cross checking a route in Shenandoah from old trip reports and still ended up on the wrong ridge. Now I pull a GPX off a hiking site, load it in the app, and bail on the headache. Does anyone else trust random GPX files or do you still map it out yourself first?
Man I feel this in my bones. I used to print out trip reports and highlight turns like I was studying for a test, and still somehow miss the one unmarked fork everybody swears is obvious. Grabbing a GPX and just going is such a game changer, especially when you're already tired and don't want to spend a whole evening planning. I still peek at the route on the map for a minute to make sure it isn't some death march or going through private land, but that's it. Life's too short to reinvent the wheel on a trail somebody already mapped out.
