Swapped bear canister for an Ursack on the JMT, half the weight gain

Used to haul a hard canister for every Sierra trip. 2.5 pounds of plastic I hated. Switched to an Ursack Major last season before the Rae Lakes loop. My back thanked me but I still hang it every night out of habit. Anyone else ditch the canister and deal with ranger pushback?

Hard canister for years, every trip up there. Same as you, hated the weight. Made the switch to the Ursack two seasons back for a trip in the Ansel Adams. Worked great for me. Never got pushback from rangers, but I also talked to them when I picked up my permit. Told them straight I was using it and they just said to make sure my hang was solid. I still hang it most nights too. Old habits never die, but the lighter pack is worth it.
