My DIY fire pit lasted 3 weeks before the blocks started sinking
Built a fire pit in the backyard last month using those cheap concrete wall blocks from the big box store. Followed a YouTube tutorial and thought I was golden. After 3 weeks the blocks on one side sank about 2 inches and now the whole ring leans. I think I skipped the gravel base step because I was lazy. Do I need to pull it all apart and start over with proper drainage or can I just lift the sunken side and pack dirt under it?
Why do we always think we can skip the boring prep steps and still get the same result? I see this everywhere, like when people paint over dirty walls or plant stuff without breaking up the soil first. The base is always the part that decides if the whole thing holds up, and dirt alone just moves around when it gets wet or freezes. You can try lifting that side and packing it, but it'll probably sink again by winter, so pulling it apart and doing a real gravel base is the move if you want it to last.
