My patio furniture build turned into an accidental bird hotel

So last Saturday I tried to build a simple bench for the backyard using some leftover cedar I had sitting in the garage. Got the frame all squared up and went inside for a drink, came back out and a sparrow had already started nesting in the open seat gap I left for the slats. Ended up having to wait 3 weeks before I could finish it because she laid eggs in there and I felt bad kicking her out. Has anyone else had a project get hijacked by wildlife like this?

Yeah I’ve had the exact same thing happen with a planter box I was building. Left it half done overnight and a wren had a full nest in there by morning with three eggs. I just let it sit for those few weeks too, not much you can do once they commit like that. Next time I’d suggest putting a piece of cardboard or a towel over the open spots when you walk away for more than a few minutes, keeps them from getting any ideas while you’re grabbing water.
