Just wrecked my sourdough starter on a camping trip last month
I was up in the Sierras at a campsite near Bishop and forgot my starter in the cooler overnight. Next morning it had this weird pinkish layer on top and smelled like acetone. Tried to feed it back to life but after 3 days of no bubbles I had to toss it. My buddy who bakes said I probably got cross contamination from a dirty spoon. I'm starting a new batch now but it feels like losing a pet honestly. Has anyone saved a starter after something like this happened to them?

Yo @dianal94, have you ever named a starter and talked to it like it can hear you? Because I definitely have lol. Lost mine to mold once and I swear I mourned it harder than some houseplants.

Why not just buy a new starter instead of all this drama over fermented flour water?
