Gave up on season 2 of a show and jumped to season 4 on a whim

I got bored with the slow start of 'The Expanse' season 2, so I skipped ahead to season 4 after seeing a clip online. The plot was totally different and way more intense, which was a cool surprise. It taught me that sometimes a show can change a lot and it's okay to skip around. Has anyone else done this with a series and had it work out?

My personal record is skipping three whole seasons of a show because I heard the later seasons had better monsters. I spent the first two episodes utterly lost, trying to figure out who anyone was. It was like walking into a movie an hour late, but I was too stubborn to go back. Sometimes you just have to commit to the bit, even if the bit is being completely confused.

Watched my buddy skip straight to season 5 of a spy show because he wanted to see the car chases. He had no clue who was betraying who or why the main guy was even in Berlin, but he said the action scenes were awesome on their own. He never did go back to watch the earlier stuff.

Doesn't that ruin the story's payoff?
