Just overheard a guy at the supply shop talking about rebar in forge welds

He said he's been sneaking pieces of rebar into his decorative ironwork for 3 years to save money and hasn't told a soul. Has anyone else run into this shortcut and had it fail down the road?

Gotta agree with @brian_rivera59 on this one. I've seen those welds with rebar start to crack and flake after a few seasons of weather exposure. That manganese coating doesn't just mess up the weld itself, it can cause the whole joint to slowly fail over time because it doesn't bond right with regular mild steel. Even if it looks solid at first, that hidden weakness will show up eventually, probably when someone leans on a gate or something. Three years of doing it without telling anyone is just asking for a lawsuit down the line.

Stop doing that, rebar's got a manganese coating that ruins forge welds (ask me how I know).
