Blew out a shaver mid-fade on a busy Saturday in Austin

I was working on a client at my chair in East Austin last weekend, doing a skin fade, and about halfway through my Andis shaver just died. Like, completely stopped buzzing. I panicked for a second because this guy had a full beard and I was right in the middle of blending his neckline. So I told him, give me two minutes, I had a backup pair of Wahl Balding clippers in my drawer that I barely ever use. I ran water over them to cool the blades, dried them off, and finished the fade using the clipper over comb method to clean up the edges. It actually came out cleaner than usual, and the client tipped me an extra 10 bucks. Has anyone else had a tool die on them during a cut and had to improvise? What do you keep as backup in your station?

I was dead wrong about the downtown parking garage mural

I thought that giant art wall on the third floor of the garage was just a waste of taxpayer money, but after I had to wait 20 minutes for my kid last Tuesday I actually looked at it. The hidden details with the old Bothell landmarks... it legit tells a story. Has anyone else noticed the old theater sign buried in the trees part?

PSA: That free VPN I was using was selling my browsing data

I used a free VPN app for six months because I didn't want to pay for one. Then I noticed my phone kept getting ads for things I searched for on my laptop. Ran a traffic check and saw it was sending my DNS requests to third parties. Switched to a paid service for $5 a month after that. Anyone else have a free tool that turned out sketchy?

My mitre saw tune up made a night and day difference in my miters

I was getting gaps on my crown molding for like a year and just figured it was my technique. Finally broke down and did a full tune up on my Hitachi C12RSH last month - replaced the brushes, cleaned the arbor, and squared the blade to the fence. The cuts came out so tight I didn't even need caulk on the last room I did. Has anyone else put off maintenance on their saw and then been shocked at how much better it works after?

Hostels vs coworking cafes for wifi... hostels win every time for me

I spent 6 months bouncing between coworking spots in Chiang Mai and got sick of buying overpriced lattes just to use the internet, but a proper hostel lounge gave me fiber speeds for free. Has anyone else ditched the cafe scene for hostel lobbies instead?

Finally cracked a short story after 6 months of writer's block

I used to just stare at a blank page for hours trying to force a first line, but last Tuesday I switched to writing the ending scene first and the whole thing just clicked. That one trick got me from zero words to 1,200 words in a single sitting, which is huge for me. Has anyone else found a weird method that broke their writer's block out of nowhere?

Rant: That $40 microplane I ignored for years is honestly life changing

Been using the same dull veggie peeler to zest lemons for like 8 years. Always thought microplanes were overhyped. Then a line cook brought his own to work last Tuesday. Told me to try it on a batch of gremolata. Night and day. The zest just falls off. No pith. No shredded fingers. Picked one up at Restaurant Depot for $12. Threw my old peeler in the trash. Has anyone else had a tool they swore was junk until they actually tried it?
