That old kitchen faucet finally gave out and left me scrambling

Wednesday morning my 20 year old Delta kitchen faucet started spraying water everywhere from a crack in the handle base. By noon the cabinet underneath was soaked and I had a puddle spreading across the linoleum. I shut off the supply valves and ran to Home Depot for a replacement, but the new one didn't fit the existing holes. Ended up having to drill new holes in the granite countertop which took 3 hours and a diamond bit. Anyone else run into trouble swapping out old plumbing fixtures that aren't standard sizes anymore?

Vent: A client told me my color work looked 'dated' last week

I had a regular who usually loves what I do come in for a refresh last Wednesday. Halfway through foils she said my technique felt old school and asked if I ever use those new 'painting' methods she saw on Instagram. It stung a bit because I've been doing this for 12 years and pride myself on clean roots. She wasn't mean about it but it got me thinking about whether I should try some newer approaches. Has anyone else had a client make you question your go-to methods?

Took 90 minutes to figure out a tube sheet layout I could have done in 20

Had a heat exchanger bundle to retube last Tuesday and spent way too long trying to lay out the tube sheet pattern with a ruler and calipers. Kept second guessing my spacing and counting holes over and over. Finally just used a cardboard template with a center punch to mark all the holes at once and finished the whole layout in 20 minutes. Has anyone else found a quicker way to lay out complex tube patterns that saves them from overthinking it?

TIL cutting crown molding flat takes way longer than I thought

Honestly, I spent a whole Saturday trying to cut crown molding flat on a miter saw for my dining room project. I kept tweaking the angles and making test cuts, and after 4 hours I only had two pieces that fit right. Ngl, I thought it would be a quick afternoon job, maybe 2 hours tops for the whole room. Every YouTube video makes it look so smooth but nobody mentions the constant trial and error. I ended up using a corner jig and it took me 8 hours total to get all 8 corners right. Has anyone else burned a whole day on crown molding?

Overheard a framer in Madison say my osb orientation was backwards

I was grabbing lumber at Home Depot in Madison last weekend and overheard an old framer telling a younger guy that my whole roof sheathing layout was wrong (not like he knew it was mine, but I had just stacked it in my cart). He said I was putting the strength axis the wrong way across the trusses, which honestly I never even thought about before. I went home and checked my plans and sure enough, I had it 90 degrees off on 3 panels. Has anyone else had a random stranger at the store save them from a big mistake?

Vent: That "anime is for kids" take from a coworker really got me

Overheard my shop's receptionist telling a client that anime is just cartoons for kids, while I was in the back drying a doodle. She said it like it was a fact, and the client nodded along. Has anyone else had to shut down that argument mid-groom or just walked away to avoid the headache?

I finally tried salting my steaks 24 hours ahead instead of right before cooking

For years I thought dry brining was just extra work, but after a buddy swore it made his ribeyes taste way better I gave it a shot last Sunday and honestly the crust came out way crispier and the inside was more evenly cooked - has anyone else found it actually changes the texture or is it mostly hype?

Overheard a homeowner say 'it's just plugging in some cables' yesterday

I was at a service call in Austin last week and the customer was on the phone telling their friend that my job was basically 'plugging in a few cables' like it's as easy as setting up a lamp. Bruh I spent 45 minutes fishing lines through a wall with fireblock and old insulation before I even got to terminate anything. People really don't see the time it takes to run clean drops, deal with attic heat, and make sure signal loss is under control. This is why some folks think we overcharge when they see a $150 service fee. Has anyone else had a customer totally downplay what we actually do on site?

Warning: Binging The Walking Dead made me forget how to talk to people

I used to breeze through a season of a show in one weekend, no problem. Then I started The Walking Dead last month and got completely hooked. I spent like 12 hours on a Saturday watching episodes, barely moving from the couch. Next day I went to grab coffee and my friend asked how my weekend was. I just stared at her and grunted like a zombie for a solid 5 seconds before snapping out of it. She thought I was messing around but I honestly felt like my brain had turned to mush from all that survival drama. Now I have to force myself to watch just 2 episodes a night or I lose all sense of reality. Has anyone else had a show mess with their head like that?
