Comparing my father's old tile-laying method to the modern leveling system I used last month

My dad has been installing tile for 35 years. He always swore by the old way with spacers and a rubber mallet, adjusting each tile by eye. I helped him on jobs as a kid and saw him make it look easy. Last month I tiled my own kitchen floor, about 120 square feet, and decided to try those plastic tile leveling clips and wedges. I spent $30 on a kit. The difference was night and day. My tiles lined up perfectly flat every time, no lippage at all. Dad came over and looked at it, grumbled something about newfangled gadgets, but he didn't say it was bad. Has anyone else switched from the old methods to these leveling systems and had a totally different experience than they expected?

The old way worked fine for 35 years, so maybe people are overthinking a floor.

Is your dad secretly plotting to "accidentally" drop your leveling clips into a crevice when you're not looking? My father-in-law calls them training wheels for tile.
