Pro tip: I started telling new players to ignore the rulebook for the first 15 minutes

We had a group that took forever to start playing. Last game night, I just set up Scythe, gave everyone their pieces, and said 'let's just move stuff around for a bit.' Actually playing for a few turns made the rules click way faster than reading them. Does this ruin the 'proper' learning experience or is it a good shortcut?
