Saw a guy at PAX Unplugged explain his whole game collection by color instead of mechanic

I was at PAX Unplugged in Philly last year and this guy had set up his entire booth's display with games sorted by the color of the box. Reds together, blues together, all that. He told me he never sorts by weight or genre anymore because when friends come over they just pick whatever color catches their eye. It sounded weird at first but honestly it made me rethink how I store my 40 or so games at home. Has anyone else tried something like that just to get more games to the table quicker?

No way, I gotta push back hard on this. Sorting by color sounds like chaos to me because what if you're in the mood for a heavy strategy game but all you see is a bright yellow box that turns out to be some light party game? You'd waste time grabbing stuff based on the cover instead of knowing what you're actually getting into. Plus when you have 40 games you probably remember them by type like worker placement or deck builders not by whether the box is green or blue. That system might work for a booth at a convention but at home you're just making it harder to find what you actually want to play. I tried sorting my own games by color once and it lasted about a week before I switched back because every time friends came over we ended up arguing over which box looked cooler instead of picking something we'd all enjoy.

Totally get where you're coming from but for me the color system actually makes grabbing a game way faster.

Then you just grab whatever game matches your mood or the room's vibe.
