Stumbled on a weird fact about Catan tournament winners

I was digging through the BoardGameGeek stats last night (procrastinating, you know how it is) and found that over 65% of Catan tournament winners since 2015 started with the same settlement placement pattern. It's that one near the 6-9-5 intersection, but only if the numbers are arranged a certain way. I checked like 20 past winners in the database from the World Championships in Essen and the pattern held up. Has anyone else noticed this or is my insomnia making me see things?

Oh man that's wild but it totally makes sense when you think about it. People get into these ruts with patterns that work and just stick with them even when the situation changes. I see the same thing at my local coffee shop where everyone lines up at the same register even when the other one is wide open, just because that's what they always do. The brain likes to find a comfort zone and just stay there, whether it's picking settlements or picking a parking spot.

My buddy Dave swears by that exact setup. He went to a local qualifier last year and the guy who won literally placed settlements right there every single game. Said he felt like he was playing against a bot or something.

Yeah I get what you mean @blakem37 but that's actually not QUITE how it works. The placements are based on the map and the opening rolls, not some pre-set pattern. I've seen guys run that same approach and get crushed when the dice don't cooperate.
