Hit 100 straight days of asking random people their weirdest habit

I started this thing in June where I ask one stranger a week about their weirdest habit for a personal blog. I hit 100 days of it last Tuesday and realized I've heard way more than I expected. Has anyone else done a weird personal project that just snowballed on them like this?

TIL Roman concrete wasn't just lime and volcanic ash like I always thought

I was walking through the Baths of Caracalla in Rome last month and noticed the walls had these little white chunks that looked like they didn't belong. Turns out they used quicklime mixed in hot, which made the concrete self-healing when cracks formed. Has anyone else noticed weird details like that on ancient sites?

Shoutout to the lady who yelled at me for cutting her rose stems too short

I had a customer in Portland last spring who flipped out because I trimmed her long-stem roses down to fit a standard vase. She said I 'ruined the whole point of long stems' and made me redo the arrangement. Does the stem length really matter that much to customers or was she just having a bad day?

Rant: That time my forge fire nearly took out the shed

I was out in my backyard shop in Tulsa, heating up a 3/4 inch bar for a gate hinge, and the wind caught the draft just wrong... next thing I know, the wood siding near the forge is smoking. I doused it quick with a bucket of sand, but it melted the paint off in a 2-foot patch. Has anyone else had a close call from a stray spark catching something unexpected?

Serious question, has anyone else's air fryer turned frozen Brussels sprouts from a mushy mess into crispy little green gems in just 12 minutes?

I used to steam them for my husband (who hated them) but after one accidental air fryer test, he now asks for them twice a week, which is a change I did not see coming.

Overheard a guy at the coffee shop say his smart speaker was 'just a dumb clock now'

I was waiting in line at The Daily Grind yesterday and this guy was telling his friend his Echo Show basically just shows the time since the last big update. He said the new layout buries his smart home controls under three menus and pushes ads for Amazon music he doesn't use. It got me thinking about how many reviews focus on unboxing and first impressions, but never check back after six months when a software update can wreck a gadget's main use. My own tablet got a lot slower after a year, but I never see that in the initial hype. How do you even find reviews that talk about long-term use, or is that just something we have to figure out on our own after buying?

That one week where every job had a perfect subfloor

I had a run of four installs in a row where the subfloor was just ready to go. No squeaks, no high spots, no old adhesive to scrape. The first was a condo in the Pearl District, and the owner said the previous owner had just redone it. I laid the pad and carpet in about half my usual time. The next three jobs were the same, even a 1970s house I was sure would be a nightmare. It saved me maybe 12 hours of prep work across the whole week. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it never did. It's rare to get a streak like that where the hardest part is already done for you. Has anyone else had a lucky run where everything was just flat and clean?

Honestly, I thought the 'write for 15 minutes a day' advice was total nonsense

Ngl, I was super skeptical when I saw that prompt challenge floating around here a few months ago. I figured you needed big blocks of time to get anything done. But I tried it for a solid week, just setting a timer on my phone. I got about 300 words each session, which is way more than my usual zero. What convinced me was finishing a short story draft in under a month, something I'd been 'working on' for a year. Has anyone else had a simple prompt or rule actually break through a writing block for them?

Just realized I've poured over 1000 tons of metal in my career. That number kinda blew my mind.

I was filling out some paperwork for a safety award and had to add up my production hours. Did the rough math on average pour weights from the old brass fittings job in Toledo to the current steel castings run. Hit that four-digit tonnage mark without even noticing. It's wild to think about all that molten stuff, from tiny ingots to those massive gear blanks we did for the mill. Makes you think about the scale of this work over the years. Anyone else ever stop and calculate their lifetime tonnage? What did you get?

I switched from a 12-inch to a 16-inch circular saw blade for ripping 2x stock and the difference in cut speed and finish was huge, but my buddy says the bigger blade is just more dangerous and a waste for most jobs.

After making the switch six months ago on a big deck build, I can rip a full sheet of 3/4 ply in under 30 seconds with a much cleaner edge, but I want to know if the added kickback risk and blade cost is worth it for you all.
