That moment I tried teaching my dad Catan after 15 years of gaming

So last Sunday I pulled out my old copy of Catan and tried to teach my dad how to play. He spent 10 minutes staring at the hex tiles before asking if the sheep were for eating. I figured he would catch on after a round or two but nope, he traded me a brick for a sheep and then got mad when I built a road with it. What I learned is that some people just don't have that puzzle solving brain for board games no matter how simple you make it. Has anyone else had a family member completely miss the point of a classic game?
