Had a flange gasket blow on a boiler in a Kansas City paper mill last winter.

It was minus ten outside and we lost pressure fast. My lead grabbed a spare from the truck and we had it swapped in under an hour, but my hands were numb for two days. Anyone have a better trick for keeping gasket kits warm in the truck during a deep freeze?

You know, what about the actual gasket material itself? Some of those cheap ones get hard as a rock in the cold and won't seal right even if they're warm when you install them. I started asking our supplier for the cold-rated nitrile kits for winter stock. They cost a bit more but stay flexible way longer. Had one sit in my unheated toolbox for a week at zero degrees and it still bent without cracking.

Keep a small insulated lunch bag with a hand warmer in your truck for the gasket kits.

Worry more about warming your hands than the gasket.
