Heard a shop foreman say pipe tolerances are getting ignored on new builds

Overheard a foreman from a big refinery project talking about how some crews are skipping the 1/8 inch tolerance checks on steam lines to save time. If that slips through, you're looking at leaks or worse during startup. Anyone else seeing this kind of shortcut on your sites?

I read a Safety Report from a major oil company that said exactly THIS is happening on some of their Gulf Coast jobs. They caught a crew using a tape measure that was a FULL 1/4 inch off on a 12 inch steam line. The foreman in the article admitted they were just "eyeballing" the fit instead of using a gauge. That's how you get those massive steam leaks that can flash burn someone in seconds.

That "1/4 inch off" story sounds like an exaggeration cooked up by a safety guy who never actually ran steam lines himself. I've worked with old timers who could eyeball a 12 inch line fit within a hair of perfect every time, with NO gauge needed. Those "massive steam leaks" you're scared of? They're way more common from rushing a job with brand new tools that someone didn't calibrate right. Sometimes the old school method has more real world reliability than some report written by a desk jockey.
