Pro tip: A foreman in Corpus Christi showed me a trick with a 3/8 inch punch for lining up flanges
We were fighting a stubborn one on a heat exchanger and he just tapped it in a specific spot. Anyone know other tricks for stubborn flange alignment?

Disagree on the gasket check being the first move. That punch trick works because it's about the flange faces, not the gasket. If the faces aren't parallel, a perfect gasket won't help. I always try to get the metal lined up first. Then the gasket just drops in. Starting with the gasket feels like putting the cart before the horse.

Oh man, that punch trick is a lifesaver... honestly, the real game changer for me was learning to check if the gasket itself is fighting you. Sometimes a fresh one gets a little kinked or folded in the bolt hole and it'll pull everything out of whack no matter what you do. Pull it out, lay it flat, and try again.

That's a solid point from avery_smith22. A folded gasket will ruin your whole afternoon. Just have to stop and fix it before anything else lines up.
