Can we talk about how we used to pick our book club books?

For years, our group in Springfield just voted on a list of popular bestsellers, and our discussions were always pretty surface-level. The change came last fall when one member insisted we read 'The Overstory' by Richard Powers, which none of us would have chosen. That single book sparked the most passionate, three-hour debate we've ever had about themes and structure. Now, we take turns bringing in a 'wild card' pick every other month, and it's completely transformed our meetings. Has your group ever tried a system like that to break out of a reading rut?

Honestly sounds like a lot of work for a book club lol. We just pick something that looks good and meet up for wine, the chat is whatever it is. Three hour debate about tree structure? I'd fall asleep.
