My book club kept pushing 'literary' picks for 2 years, then one member finally called it out

We've been meeting at the same library branch in Boise since 2019 and I was always the one picking the heavy award winners. Last month someone brought up that we never read anything fun, like actual page turners. I sat there realizing I'd been choosing books to look smart instead of books we'd enjoy talking about. How do other clubs balance that? Do you have a rule about mixing genres or do you just let the loudest reader decide?

So you spent two years on "heavy award winners" and nobody said a word until last month? Are people actually reading those picks or just showing up to the meeting?
