Our group's 'no spoilers' rule is causing more fights than it stops
I've been in my book club for about two years now, and we always had a strict 'no spoilers' rule for our monthly chats. The idea was to let everyone read at their own pace. But last month, talking about 'The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo', it blew up. Someone mentioned a character's 'complicated journey' and three people yelled that was a spoiler for the ending. It turned into a 20 minute argument about what counts as a hint versus a full reveal. In my experience, banning all hints just makes people scared to talk about the book at all. Now our discussions are super surface level because no one wants to get yelled at. We're missing the whole point of a book club, which is to dig into the story together. Has your group found a better way to handle this, like a clear spoiler policy posted ahead of time?
