Overheard a book club member say they skip chapters to 'get to the point'

It was at the library in Cedar Rapids, and honestly, it made me wonder how common that is. Do you think skipping parts ruins the discussion, or is it a valid way to handle a long book?

Skip chapters in a book club, what's even the point of showing up?

My book club read a 500 page fantasy novel last year and half the group fell behind. We started doing quick chapter summaries at the beginning of each meeting for anyone who got stuck. It kept everyone in the loop and the discussions were still good. Sometimes the point is just to be with people who like books, even if you didn't finish every page. How does your club handle it when people can't keep up?
