Why does every book club pick a 400 page doorstop and then nobody finishes it
Our group of 9 people voted on 4 books back in January and somehow the pick was a 412 page novel that only 2 of us actually finished by the meeting. The other 7 skimmed the Wikipedia summary and spent 90 minutes talking about the ending they hadn't read, which made the whole talk feel fake. I get wanting something meaty, but when the choice is between a book everyone reads and a book everyone pretends to read, the short one wins every time. I said this at the meeting in Rachel's kitchen and got real quiet looks, so maybe I'm the odd one here. Does your club have a page limit rule or do you just let it happen?
