Overheard a guy at the Denver Botanic Gardens say succulents are 'lazy plants'

I was at the Denver Botanic Gardens last weekend and some guy walked past a row of echeverias and called them 'lazy plants for lazy people.' I got kinda tight because I have like 30 of them at home and they take real care. But it did make me wonder if the whole succulent craze dumbs down what real botany is about. Has anyone else run into people judging plant choices like that?

Does the guy calling them lazy also skip watering his plants for three weeks and then wonder why they're dead? Succulents just happen to be good at surviving our mistakes, but getting them to actually thrive takes more attention than people give them credit for. Maybe the real issue isn't the plants but that some folks think their own gardening style is the only valid one.

Oh I have to respectfully disagree on this one. My mom has been growing succulents for years and she treats them way different than her other plants, more like a special routine than neglect. Plants that thrive on low maintenance aren't necessarily getting less care, they're just getting the right kind of care for their specific needs.

Totally agree with you here, your mom sounds like she really gets it!
