My coworker's 'wait 48 hours before posting' advice saved me in Portland

Last week our bakery had a customer complaint blow up on local FB and my first draft was a long defensive response. My coworker told me to sit on it for two days, and by then the original post got deleted and people moved on. Anyone else found that patience beats a quick reply in these messes?

48 hours was enough time for that thread to die, but what about the next time it happens? I got burned following that same advice last spring when a supplier shorted us on flour. I waited two days to correct a false claim about our pricing, and by then the rumor had spread to three different neighborhood groups and two local news sites. The original poster deleted their post, sure, but the screenshots were already out there. That quick response wouldve shown we were on top of it and gave people the real numbers right away. Sometimes sitting on it just means you lose control of the story.
