My grandma's 50 cent stew starter changed how I cook...

I was at her place in Pittsburgh last fall and she pulled out a jar of her own canned tomato base she's been making since the 70s... Tossed it in a pot with some cheap veggies and it tasted better than anything I spend $20 on now, anyone else got a family trick that saves money?

That 50 cent starter sounds like pure gold honestly...

Made the same thing work for me last summer actually. Picked up a 50 cent starter pack from a garage sale and it ended up being the best money i ever spent on gardening stuff. Threw the seeds in some old pots with dirt from the backyard and they grew like crazy without me doing much of anything lol. The real trick was just leaving them outside in the sun and watering when i remembered, which wasn't always. Now i'm hooked and always checking thrift stores for random seed packs.

Gotta disagree with you on that one... cheap seeds from a garage sale are a gamble I can't get behind. I tried that route once with a pack of "mixed flowers" that turned out to be mostly dandelions and some random weed that took over my whole garden bed. By the time I realized what happened, I had to dig everything out and start over. At least with store bought seeds you know what you're planting and they haven't been sitting in some old shed for five years. Glad it worked out for you, but I'll stick to buying fresh packs from the hardware store.
