Unpopular opinion: I spent $40 on a fancy rice cooker and it was a total waste. My cheap pot works just as well.

So what kind of rice were you trying to cook in it... like basic white rice, or something trickier? The cheap pot method can totally burn the bottom layer if you're not watching it every second. A good cooker should handle different types without any fuss and keep it warm for hours. That's where the money might actually be worth it, for the set-it-and-forget-it part. If you only make plain rice once a week, then yeah, the pot is probably fine.

My buddy tried making jasmine rice in a basic pot last week and scorched the whole bottom. He was just distracted for a few minutes. Now he gets why people swear by those automatic cookers.
