Blew $200 on airport food in Lisbon before I figured out the grocery store trick
Two years ago I spent 4 days in Lisbon and dropped around $200 just eating at the airport and tourist spots near my hotel because I assumed finding cheap food would be too hard. On day 3 I watched a local woman walk into a Pingo Doce supermarket and come out with bread, cheese, and fruit for under 3 euros, and that one meal cost me less than a single airport coffee. How do you all find the regular grocery stores when you land somewhere new?
My proudest travel moment was paying 14 euros for a sad panini at a train station in Italy, so you are in good company. What works for me is typing "supermarket" into the map app before I even leave the airport, then checking if it is a chain like Pingo Doce or Lidl since those are everywhere and cheap. Local markets are even better if you can find one open, the kind with fruit stands and a bakery counter. The first meal after landing is always the dumbest one, so now I just grab bread, cheese, and something weird from the snack aisle and call it dinner.
