Just realized my biggest budget travel mistake was always booking the 'cheapest' flight

I was in a hostel in Lisbon last month and this guy from Australia said he never sorts flights by price. He said he always sorts by 'duration' first, even if it costs a bit more. I thought he was crazy, but then he broke it down. He booked a flight to Bangkok for $50 more than the cheapest option, but it was a direct 11 hour flight instead of a 19 hour trip with a layover in Dubai. He saved a full night in a hostel, two meals at the airport, and didn't arrive totally wrecked. I always chased the absolute lowest number, but that extra $50 saved him over $100 in other costs and a day of his trip. It made me rethink my whole search process. Has anyone else found that the 'cheapest' ticket actually ends up costing you more in the end?

Wait, he found a direct flight for only fifty bucks more?! That is UNREAL. Every time I try that, the direct option is like three hundred dollars extra. I would 100% pay fifty to skip a whole layover day. Your friend got crazy lucky with those prices.

That's a solid point for long trips, but honestly most of my flights are short hops. A two hour layover to save a hundred bucks still feels worth it to me.

Totally depends on the trip length, @oliviagrant.
