My flight to Lisbon was $200 cheaper if I landed in a different city

I was booking a trip to Portugal and saw a direct flight to Lisbon for $600. But a flight to Porto was only $400, with a 3 hour train ride to Lisbon for about $25. I picked the Porto option, saved over $150, and got to see a cool extra city for an afternoon. Has anyone else saved big by flying into a cheaper nearby airport and taking ground transport?

Yeah, the "huge pain" part is real... my last attempt at this ended with me napping in a train station bathroom. Still saved like eighty bucks though.

Works great for European trips with solid train systems.

Honestly though, that sounds like a huge pain for what, saving a hundred bucks? You're adding a whole extra travel leg, dealing with trains after a long flight. Tbh my time and comfort are worth more than that. Plus if your first flight gets delayed, you miss your train and you're stuck. Ngl I'd rather just pay the extra for the direct flight and actually start my vacation.

Yeah, that's the part that makes you think twice.
