Shoutout to the free walking tour guides in Lisbon

I was in Lisbon last month and decided to try one of those 'free' walking tours you see advertised. I was a bit worried it would be a waste of time or just a long sales pitch. Our guide, Maria, took us through the Alfama district for almost three hours, pointing out hidden courtyards and local bakeries we would have missed. At the end, she explained the model is tip-based, and you pay what you think it was worth. I gave her 15 euros, which felt fair for the time and info, but I saw some people just walk away. It got me thinking, what's the real budget-friendly etiquette here? For a solo traveler, it was way cheaper than a formal tour. Has anyone else had a really good or really bad experience with these tip-based tours in other cities?

My buddy did one in Prague last year. His guide was this guy Tomas who knew all the weird history, like which alleyways were used in medieval times. He said the group was huge though, maybe thirty people. Watched a couple just vanish when it was time to tip.

Used to think those free tours were a scam, but then I took one in Barcelona and it totally changed my mind. The guide took us through the Gothic Quarter and showed us a courtyard with an ancient Roman wall just sitting there behind a random door. Like @faith684 said, I just budget for it like a regular ticket cost now. I usually toss in 10-15 euro depending on how long it goes, feels right for a few hours of their time.

I did a free tour in Berlin and gave 10 euros, felt right for a solid two hours. That story from @lucashart about people vanishing is rough, guides really do work for those tips. I always budget for it like a regular ticket cost.
