Warning: That "free airport lounge access" credit card trick backfired on me hard

Ngl, I was totally skeptical about those blogs saying you could get free lounge passes just by signing up for a specific credit card. I tried it last month with some card offering 4 free visits a year. Turns out the annual fee was $95 and they hit me with a $35 surcharge for using the lounge during peak hours at JFK. Has anyone else gotten burned by these hidden fees or is there actually a card that doesn't screw you over?

...and honestly even those 4 free visits aren't really free when you factor in the annual fee. I signed up for a similar card and got stuck with a $45 charge because I didn't realize they only waived the fee if you spent over $5k that month. It's buried in the fine print and by the time you catch it you've already paid.
