Talking to my neighbor about his grocery bill made me rethink my whole budget

This older guy in my building told me he spends $40 a week on food for himself by sticking to a list he makes from store flyers. I was dropping $120 easy on random stuff and never even looked at sales. Anyone else have a conversation that casually wrecked your spending habits?

Did you try switching to store brands first, that cut my bill by almost half!

Ha, yeah because paying $4 for fancy pasta shapes was really the problem here.

Read something the other day about how store brands and name brands are often made in the same factories, just with different labels. Doesn't always hold true for every product, but for stuff like pasta, cereal, and canned goods it's pretty common. My own grocery bill took a similar hit when I finally gave up on the fancy boxes. Feels like someone's getting rich off our brand loyalty, and it ain't us.
