Visited a food co-op in Portland and changed my mind about bulk bins

I always thought bulk buying was just for rich hippies, but after seeing how much cheaper oatmeal and rice are per pound there, I saved $12 on my first trip alone. Has anyone else found a weird spot that changed their budget mindset?

Tell me - did the bulk spices end up being a good deal or not?

Got a buddy who bought a huge bag of cumin from that bulk place. He used it twice and then forgot about it for like a year, found it all clumpy and weird.

I used to think bulk spices were always the smarter move, but that cumin story turned me around on it. My own experience with a giant bag of paprika went pretty much the same way - it lost its punch way before I could finish it. So yeah, I guess smaller jars are actually the better deal for me now, your mileage may vary.
