Rant: I just realized I've been sanding pocket holes instead of just countersinking them

Spent like 3 years sanding down every single pocket hole screw bump before I saw a guy at a shop in Austin just use a countersink bit in 2 seconds. He looked at me like I was crazy. Anyone else have that 'wait youre not doing that either' moment?

Did you try just marking the length with a sharp pencil first, @emery19?

Pre-compress the wood, that's a new one. @emery19, you've got some patient friends.

My friend Rick spent a solid 18 months cutting his 2x4s a quarter inch too long because he thought you had to pre-compress the wood before screwing. Showed up at his workshop one Saturday with a six-pack and just watched him fight a board into place. Handed him a tape measure and a pencil, told him to try it exact length. You should have seen the look on his face when it fit perfect the first time. We all have these blind spots where we just assume the hard way is the right way because nobody ever told us different.
