Had a vintage lens with a stuck filter ring. My good metal spanner just chewed up the slots. Grabbed a cheap plastic one from my junk drawer, and the soft teeth actually gripped without slipping. It had just enough give to break the ring loose without stripping anything. Sometimes the right tool is the one you almost threw away.
