Rant: A customer's note about my shutter CLA made me redo my whole testing routine
A regular at my counter in Boise handed back a Nikon FM2 I'd serviced and asked why the 1/1000 speed still sounded a hair off, which stung because I'd called it good by ear. Turns out I was skipping a real speed test on the high end, so now I run every curtain through a timer before it leaves the bench. Anyone got a cheap way to check speeds above 1/500 without a dedicated tester?
Smart move checking the curtains instead of trusting your ear. If you film the shutter at high speed with your phone in slo-mo and count frames against a known light source, you can get a rough read on 1/1000 without buying a tester.
