Overheard a guy at REI talking about his tent footprint

I was browsing sleeping pads yesterday and this dude told his friend he uses a Polycryo window film instead of a $50 tent footprint. He said he's used the same $6 roll for 3 seasons now and just cuts a new piece when it wears out. Has anyone else tried this or am I crazy for still buying the overpriced branded footprints?

Does he just tape it to the ground or does it actually stay put under the tent.

Wait, you're telling me he just tapes it?? That is ABSOLUTELY insane. No way that holds up in any kind of wind or if someone just trips on the edge.
