PSA: my $180 camp stove's regulator died on night 2 at Great Basin and we ate cold beans
Heads up for anyone buying a stove this season, check the regulator before you trust it on a real trip. Mine failed on the second night at Great Basin last month, temp dropped to 34 and the flame just kept shrinking until it died completely. I pulled the hose off and found a cracked o-ring inside the regulator plus a bent pin, so gas was leaking slowly the whole time. We ended up eating cold beans out of the can and boiling nothing, which was our own fault for not packing a backup. I got a $25 replacement regulator at a hardware store in Ely the next morning and it worked fine, but the trip was already half ruined. Now I test every new stove in the driveway for 20 minutes before it goes in the truck. Has anyone else had a regulator go bad this fast, or did I just get a bad one?
