Had a 20-year-old Makita cordless drill finally give up the ghost on a deck job yesterday.

The chuck just seized solid, and I had to run to the supply house for a new one. Anyone have a good way to salvage the old batteries for something else?

Honestly, that sounds more like a bad day than a dead drill. A seized chuck is often just a rebuild kit away from working again, not a total loss. Might be worth cracking it open before you write it off.

Wait, a drawer FULL of chuck rebuild kits? That's a level of preparedness (and drill breakdowns) I've never even imagined. My old boss just had a drawer full of stale cough drops and frustration.

My old boss used to keep a drawer full of chuck rebuild kits for that exact thing, @walker.cole is right. Those old Makita batteries are perfect for a DIY shop light if the drill is truly toast.
