Rant: My miter saw blade pinched and kicked back halfway through a crown molding cut for a kitchen in Bellingham

I shut it off, clamped the piece to a scrap board with a 2x4, and finished the cut with a handsaw to save the $80 piece of poplar, but man, what's your go-to move when a cut starts to bind?

I used to just force a pinching cut and hope for the best, but a kickback last year that nearly took my thumb off changed my whole view. Your scrap board clamp trick is exactly the right move, it saves the piece and your fingers. I saw what happened to @henderson.wesley with the nails, and that's another good reason to just stop and reassess. Now my only go-to is to kill the power immediately and find a safer way to finish the cut.

My last pinch was on oak, so I used a sacrificial backer board.

Yeah that's smart. I just ruined a table saw blade last week trying to cut some old pallet wood, it was full of nails I didn't see.
