Showerthought: I used to hate silicone sealant on flashing until a roofer in Denver showed me how he does it
Last Tuesday I watched him lay a perfect bead with no drips on a 30-year-old chimney cap and now I'm swapping my butyl tape for GE Silicone II on every metal-to-masonry joint - anyone else had a tool or material they swore off but changed their mind after seeing someone use it right?

Well @dylanmurray, it's just silicone sealant, not a magic trick.

Wait, how did he get a clean bead on a 30-year-old chimney cap without it pulling or cracking? I've tried silicone on old masonry before and it always ends up looking like garbage once the mortar shifts. What was his prep work like, did he use a specific primer or just go raw?
