I thought those new heat pumps were just for rich people in warm places

My neighbor in Maine got one installed last winter and his heating bill dropped by 40 percent. I looked it up and found out they work even when it's below zero outside, which I never knew. Has anyone else in a cold area switched to a heat pump and seen real savings?

Wait, so your neighbor's bill dropped 40% but how much did the unit and install cost him? That's a huge upfront hit. Even @terry_carter15 said you need a backup, so you're paying for two systems.

Actually got one in Vermont last year... they work fine in the cold but you really need a backup for those super cold snaps. Still cut my oil use way down though.

That's a huge drop... good for your neighbor. Terry's point about a backup is key though. What kind of backup system did your neighbor pair it with, and how often did it actually kick in last winter? Trying to figure out the real cost if you still need a furnace or boiler on standby.
