Checked out a new roastery in Portland last weekend
They had this single origin from Ethiopia that tasted like straight blueberries, never had anything like it from a pour over. Anybody know if that's just something from that region or did they do something special to it?

That "tastes like blueberries" thing with Ethiopian beans is actually super common from that region, especially from Yirgacheffe. I've had a few bags over the years and it's not some special trick they did, it's just how the beans from that area naturally come out when they're processed right. It's definitely a cool experience the first time you hit it (I remember being blown away myself), but I think roasters sometimes hype it up as something rare when it's really just a classic flavor profile from that part of the world. So yeah, you're not wrong about the blueberries, but it's not a secret recipe or anything.

Yeah I had the same thing. First time I got a bag from a local roaster that said "blueberry bomb" on it I was like okay sure. But then I brewed it and it was honestly kind of uncanny. Tasted just like blueberry danish. Not like coffee with a hint of fruit but straight up blueberry.
I think the natural process is what does it. Those beans dried inside the fruit just soak up all that flavor. Makes me wonder how many people think it's some added syrup or something the first time they taste it.
